E-bike and E-Scooter Accident Lawyer

Serving Toronto and Region

E-bikes and e-scooters have become increasingly popular across Ontario in recent years. We support all forms of active mobility and e-mobility devices that help people get around safely. However, as usage has grown, the number of collisions has also risen. Because e-bikes and e-scooters can travel at much higher speeds than regular bicycles, the severity of injuries tends to be greater when an accident occurs.

E-Scooter Accidents

E-scooters have been permitted in several municipalities across Ontario since the launch of the province’s e-scooter pilot program, including some cities in the Greater Toronto Area (though they are technically not allowed in Toronto itself).

Even with a maximum allowed speed of 24km/h, accidents can still occur, and given the design of a scooter, users are particularly vulnerable to injury. In fact, e-scooter injuries are on the rise across Canada: the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) reported that over a 12-month period, 498 people were hospitalized for scooter-related injuries, a 32% increase over the previous period.

Injuries can be severe, especially if the user is not wearing a helmet, potentially leading to traumatic brain injuries or lifelong conditions. If you are involved in an e-scooter accident, it’s important to speak with a lawyer who specializes in these cases to understand your rights.

E-Bike Accidents

E-bikes are permitted on Toronto streets, which is why they are more commonly seen than e-scooters. Bike Share Toronto reported 1.1 million total e-bike trips in 2024, up from 400,000 in 2023.

Wearing a helmet is essential to reduce the risk of head injuries; however, reports indicate that the majority of people who arrive in emergency rooms due to e-bike accidents were not wearing one.

With a maximum speed of 32km/h, higher than with an e-scooter, riders are even more vulnerable in the event of a collision. As the speed increases, so does the likelihood of a severe injury. If you suffer an e-bike accident ,it is important to consult with a lawyer who specializes in these cases to understand your rights.

Frequently Asked Questions About E-bike and E-scooter Accidents

*A Note on E-Bike and E-Scooter Accidents

We use the term “accident” broadly, but when a motor vehicle is involved, we preferably refer to them as “collisions,” because most incidents result from distracted, negligent, or unsafe driving. True “accidents” are actually rare.
